Yellow-legged GullLarus michahellis
This is the most common gull species in Bulgaria. Scientists have given it the long name Mediterranean Yellow-legged Gull. However, in Bulgaria we prefer to call it with the well-known name – “glarus”.
As a typical marine species, in the past, this seagull nested on the cliffs, beaches and islands along the Black Sea coast. More than century ago, the birds found that cities offer many convenient nesting places and food is abundant throughout the year. Therefore, some of them began nesting on the roofs of houses and the population split.
Today, many more birds inhabit the cities. Although we are accustomed to seeing them throughout the year, the seagulls also migrate like the swallows, storks and other migratory birds. Of course, their flight is much shorter.
