A deciduous tree native to the southern US states that can reach 20 m in height. It has a beautiful pyramidal crown formed with large heart-shaped leaves that are 20-30 cm long and 15-20 cm wide. In the early summer the tree blooms with large, creamy-white flowers with purple and yellow spots inside. Its fruits - long and thin, brown pods contain multiple winged flat seeds. They are the reason the species is known by the name of Indian bean tree. Pods are often left hanging on the branches in autumn and winter, giving it an interesting appearance.
Catalpa is one of the fastest growing trees in the world and is often used as ornamental in parks and gardens. The species is cultivated in different areas for the production of biomass, processed into pellets and biogas.
